With Property and Casualty Insurance an insurable interest must exist at the time of loss. Therefore if you have a car insured in someones name that does not own the car, therefore no insurable interest,  the insurance company will most likely not pay the claim. Also, it would be difficult to even buy the insurance in the first place as most carriers pull what is called a C.L.U.E. report and would see that the owner is different then the named insured. Bottom line it is not the right thing to do and could cause you a lot of issues, even if you got away with it at first.

Generally speaking, if you own your car and it is registered to you in your home staate, then the answer is probably no, you can not.  Most states require proof of liability insurance in order to register a car and the name onthe policy needs to match the registration records for that car.
