    It has become a wide-spread practice for insurance companies to deal directly with repair facilities.  The company still issues a check for the services but the check requires the signature of the insured and the repair facility to be valid.  If the vehicle is deemed unrepairable the company will issue a check to the insured for the market value of the car minus the deductible.
