When you drive a car, it should be covered under your existing policy, or it should be insured separately through someone's policy.

However, if you purchase a new vehicle, although you may not have officially added the vehicle to the policy, it is covered for a specific period of time. Typically, it is approximately 30 days.

That would depend... Some insurance companies will cover 3rd party vehicles your liability coverage will follow you depending on the policy and the State.  Some insurance companies will not cover this at all.  Check with your agent in your State first.  I would want to see that in writing before I purchase a policy.

Yes, insurance will follow the driver.  This applies only to the liability coverage however if you are driving someone else s car that is not covered by insurance.  There are some situations where the Collision and Comprehensive portion of your policy may be extended to the other vehicle.  For example, if you purchase a new car and haven't added it to your policy as yet, then as long as you had full coverage on the old vehicle, that coverage would extend.

The problem with driving an uninsured car is that in many if not all cases, if it is un insured, then it may also be un registered and therefore illegal to drive on public access roads and highways in your state or any other. Talk to your Insurance Professional about the coverage extensions from your auto policy because it may very well be that the coverage provided may indeed extend over to any vehicle you are driving that temporarily replaces yours. This would more than likely not be the case if you are driving a car in a foreign country.
