Can I Cancel My Current Auto Insurance?

Look through the contents and you will find cancellation mentioned. It usually is in the back part of the policy. It will tell you exactly what you need to do to cancel the policy. Most carriers expect the request to be in writing. Carriers should also backdate a cancellation request if you provide proof of comparable coverage with another carrier, or selling your vehicle. The company may penalize you or short-rate your cancelation, making your refund less than you expect. That also should be clearly stated in the policy.Answered on November 18, 2013flag this answer

The company will have “earned a premium” but anything remaining will be returned to you. Most companies are reluctant to cancel a policy after the date requested because they were technically on the risk. Evidence of insurance elsewhere or a bill of sale is the two evidences necessary to get a cancelled after the fact.Answered on August 26, 2014flag this answer

Of course you can, provided you've either decided to no longer drive, or you've found and purchased an alternative policy. The penalties for being an uninsured motorist are bad, and the consequences of getting caught (or worse) are long lasting. If you've found a better policy, tell your agent that you want to cancel the policy, as of the day the other one goes into effect. Thanks for asking!Answered on August 27, 2014flag this answer
