Car insurance covers a car, not a driver.  The exception is “non-owned auto.”  If you want “temporary coverage,” you will find that is difficult to obtain.  You can start a policy and then cancel it when you no longer need the coverage.  If an inexperienced driver who is not in your household drives your car and it is insured, claims will be honored.  If you have an inexperienced driver in your household under most company underwriting rules that driver will be rated against one of the cars in the household.
