    I can't think of a time that Variable annuities are a good idea.  If you are going to buy an variable annuity, you might as well just buy mutual funds.  Why pay the fees attached to the variable annuity?  The only feature of a variable annuity that is even attractive is the income rider and you can get the same or better  income rider from an indexed annuity that won't give you the growth potential that a mutual fund would but it does offer downside protection.
