   Interesting premise, that they are good. There are exceptions to everything, so that being said, variable annuities had their day in the last decade. However after the market meltdown of 2008, many manufactures of variable annuities scaled back benefits without reducing policy expenses. There may be a question on the economic viability of current variable annuity offerings.
