Annuities are rated by independent financial rating companies. These companies specialize in evaluating and assigning a rating to different types of Financial Companies & Issuers.

The main companies that do this are Standard & Poors (S&P), Moodys, Fitch, A.M. Best, Weiss, & Comdex.

It is important to know that each company has it's own rating scale. And rating scales can also differ depending on which type of financial company is being evaluated.

S&P has the easiest to understand rating scale; AAA, AA+, AA, AA-, A+, A, A-, BBB, BB+, BB, BB-, B+, B, B-  then the same for C then D and then F is default.
