I meet with many seniors and they are confused about how Medicare helps them for Long Term Care. Medicare Part A has a Skilled Nursing Facility benefit. This benefit is for rehabilitation following a hospital stay. An example would be following surgery for joint replacement or broken bones. Typically, a beneficiary would have surgery at the hospital and then be admitted to a Skilled Nursing Facility for rehab.
Medicare provides coverage for professionally licensed Nurses and Therapist to provide services in a home. This benefit is called Home Health. These services during a rehabilitation done in the home. This is not for the long term or permanent care of the beneficiary.
Long Term Care Insurance is needed for daily activities such as bathing, toileting, transferring, feeding, and dressing. These activities can be provided by a company or relative but Medicare would not provide a benefit for these services.
