The day you start earning a living is the day to start saving for retirement and for everyone else, today is the day with no further delay. Most Americans will experience longer living than previous generations. Over the years inflation has eroded purchasing power. The attempt to maintain current the lifestyle generally fails and a lower expectation of retirement ensures. Keep in mind that Social Security is more than likely going to change and more than likely not for the better. So looking to the government is not a plan.
