It is fair to say that about fifty-percent of all renters own one or more pets. So it is very common for renters policies to be issued to pet owners. These pets are not limited to dogs and cats, of course. The biggest issue is the type of animal and breed. Some are on insurance carriers' excluded pets lists. Rather than have an effect on the rate charged, more often than not the carrier will refuse to write the policy if one of the excluded animals is involved.
The key issue is injury liability to others, caused by bites.
Renters insurance will protect if a lawsuit is brought, as a result of someone else’s injury, including those caused by pets, up to the policy limits for both physical injury and property damage of others.
