Theft of a car is covered by the comprehensive portion of an auto policy. It is not covered by a tenant’s policy. Many tenant’s policies cover “motorized vehicles” used to service your home and are not designed of licensed for use on public roads. This would be a riding lawn mower or like item.

You must prove the loss and the amount and you cannot receive more than the policy limits or the per item limits. Property coverage on your renters insurance policy will also cover items in a garage or storage unit or while traveling.
