That is a great question! The answer is dependent upon where you live, and the company that your policy is with. You can certainly get a policy, even with bad credit, no problem. The price that you pay can be more though. If your State insurance laws allow the use of your credit rating as a factor in pricing, you can bet the company will. That said, I'd offer you two pieces of good news. Most times your credit rating isn't as bad as you think it is; and even with bad credit, renter's insurance isn't going to cost you much. Don't worry, go ahead and get it. Thanks for asking!

Here in Connecticut, insurance companies are able to use credit history as one of many factors in evaluating insurance. It would more than likely be possible for you to obtain Renters Insurance with a less than perfect credit score, but you will pay more than your neighbor with a better credit rating. Talk to your Insurance Professional about your options.

In California insurance company underwriters do not take your credit score into consideration when approving a homeowner’s policy. If there was a claim in the past that appeared to have been arson, they might take a closer look. Incidentally, auto insurers in California do not pull your credit score either.
