NO they can not force you to have renters insurance but they can choose to not rent to you if you do not get renters insurance. Most renters policies are on average $100 a year depending on your state that is with 40K worth of coverage on your contents and 100K in liability coverage. It is well worth the cost and in many cases if you bundle it with your auto insurance it lowers your auto insurance I have seen in many cases it lowered your auto insurance 10 a month and the renters insurance is less then 10 a month so this puts you ahead . the short answer is YES. You are the tenant and agree to abide by the rules the landlord sets out. This may seem a bit arbitrary but your landlord is looking to you to make good on the liabilities you create. For example you have a pet dog that you take out and walk daily. But one day it gets a way from you and bites a fellow tenant and neighbor. In the litigious world we are in the person bitten may take civil action against you and the landlord. Things will be a lot better fro the landlord if you have a way of paying for the damages through your insurer if you caused the loss.
