If a surgery is considered to be medically necessary by your physician, then Medicare will cover it (regardless of whether it's an inpatient or outpatient procedure - assuming you have both Part A & Part B of Medicare).

Elective procedures (e.g. cosmetic surgeries) would not be covered by Medicare and you would have to pay for it 100% out of your own pocket.

If you're unsure if your surgery would be covered, ask your doctor or call Medicare directly to find out.

I hope the input helps - please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. Thanks very much.

Medicare covers most surgery, in or out of the hospital, as long as the procedure is considered medically necessary. Routine cosmetic surgery is normally not a covered item but most reconstructive surgery is covered. Your surgeon should be aware of Medicare rules and can advise you. If in doubt, ask your surgeon.
