People who qualify for Medicare Part A must first of all be US citizens, or lawfully residing in the US for at least 5 years. They must be age 65, or else can qualify for Medicare Part A at a younger age if they have ALS, ESRD, or have been on Social Security Disability for at least 2 years.

To get free Part A, they must have worked at least 40 quarters in which they paid Social Security taxes, or be/been a spouse of someone who did.

These are the general guidelines. For specifics, call 1-800-medicare.

To qualify for Medicare Part A without having to make payments to Social Security you need 40 quarters of employment where you were paying into the Social Security system. If you do not have 40 quarters of employment then you can pay payments to Social Security system for Part A. These payments would be in addition to the Part B payments that you would pay for Part B coverage. Then if you are going to have Part D-prescription Drug coverage you would have a premium for that as well
