You are eligible for Medicare the first day of the month you turn 65. You are not automatically enrolled in Medicare when you turn 65 unless you are currently receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits. If you are not currently receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits you must request your Medicare coverage by applying online or going to you local Social Security office.

Assuming you or a spouse worked, you are eligible for Medicare on the 1st day of the month that you turn 65. For example, if your birthday is March 26th, then your Medicare Part A & B will start on March 1st. You can also make your Medicare Supplement effective on the same day. You can also set it up in advance so that you know everything is handled. For instance, your independent agent can submit your Medicare Supplement application 90 days (and sometimes longer) before your effective date.
