You can get Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage when you have Medicare Part A and/or Part B. You can purchase the plan through a broker licensed to sell Part D plans or sign up directly through the Medicare.gov website.

If you do not enroll in a Part D plan when you're first eligible, you would have to wait until the annual enrollment period (Oct 15-Dec 7 of each year) to get a plan - the effective date for the coverage would be January 1 of the following year. Another way to get a Part D plan outside of the AEP is qualifying for a special enrollment period (e.g. coming off of group coverage).

For a full list of qualifying events and other Part D input, consult with an experienced broker (licensed for Part D coverage) or go to the Medicare.gov website.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thanks very much.

If you are eligible for Medicare and covered by Medicare Part A or Part B, you are also eligible to purchase a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. Drug plans are offered and administered by private insurance carriers. The plans must be approved by CMS. Plans vary by zip code.
