No, group life insurance benefits are not covered under the COBRA act. The COBRA act was originally set in place for an employee to change jobs or companies without a gap in coverage. Unfortunately, this law does not cover your life insurance. There are plans that offer portability with group life insurance without proof of insurability but there is a fairly steep rate increase for those. The rule of thumb is always purchase personal life insurance to protect your insurability and use the employer group life plans as an extra.

No, unfortunately, life insurance is not covered under Cobra, nor are disability income insurance or accidental insurance policies. Cobra applies to the temporary continuation of group health insurance, which includes medical, dental, vision and prescription drug plans.

Group life insurance contracts are not covered under COBRA: you are not guaranteed the ability to continue coverage. Many group plans have a conversion feature - but all. Each group policy has its own set of conversion rules. You may be able to convert the policy to an individual contract provided you complete the process shortly after leaving employment.

Typically the premium rates are much higher for people converting as the adverse selection often very high. The majority of people converting are those with existing medical conditions who are unable to qualify for a policy on their own.
