That is a great question! If you are in the Armed forces, it is virtually impossible to get life insurance through a normal life insurance carrier. Being likely to see combat, or even be in an area where hostilities are likely is enough to scare off the risk averse insurer. Fortunately the Government offers life insurance through SGLI, Servicemembers' Group Life, so you can be taken care of. I hope that helps, thanks for asking!

The Army gives you $400,000 of life insurance under SGLI (Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance). There is a nominal cost to you for this coverage. If you do not want it, or do not want all of it, you can choose to take under $400,000 or none of it at all.

The military can provide options to obtaining Life Insurance and will encourage you to get all your affairs in order including Life Insurance before deployment. From what I understand, there is a small cost to this coverage.

Mainstream companies which the general public has access to usually will not provide coverage to those military personnel who are deployed to what we call "hot zones". Every Life Insurance Company has an updated list which is considered "hot" and will tend to decline coverage, or rate it higher as the likelihood of being killed is much higher.
