does life insurance cover disability? In the form of a payout? normally no. There are disability riders on life insurance policies, but they are usually only covering the premium on the policy. Some newer policies offer a rider that provides a long term care benefit, but if there is any disability coverage in a life policy it would come in the form of a rider. That said, if you have a cash value policy and become disabled, there is no restrictions on using your cash values for any purpose.

Life insurance is a mortality product that indemnifies the death of the policy insured. Life insurance may have an embedded disability provision or an additional rider for the cost of insurance or the entire annual premium. Some life insurance polices have additional morbidity riders such as disability insurance, generally on a limited basis.

Pure life insurance plans cover death by any means including accidental and even suicide (although if it occurs during the first 2 yrs the policy is in effect payment consists of return of premium).

Some policies have disability riders (including AD&D) which may have some nominal value. If you need disability coverage you should purchase it separate from your life insurance.

Traditional Life Insurance does not cover disability unless a Disability Income Rider is added to the life insurance policy. There also exists a Waiver of Premium rider, but it simply pays the premium for the life insurance policy in the event that the policyholder becomes disabled. Disability Insurance policies can be purchased to provide for the need for income while unable to work due to covered injuries or illnesses.
