Water can be a major headache and also quite damaging to your property. In general, water damage that is weather related, oter than flood, is covered under a homeowners policy. Here in CT and throughout many northern states, we are unfortunately dealing with severe "ice damming" on residential and commercial property rooves. This causes water from melted ice to be forced up under roofing material which then can leak into the building. This causes some major damage to inside walls, flooring etc. This type of loss is covered. Water that is suddenly dischargesd as a result of a burst pipe, for example is also usually covered. Talk to your insurance professional about your policy and ask about any specific coverage limitations.

Not all! Accidental discharge of water and its attendant damages is normally covered. This means when there is an accidental discharge of liquids or steam from the plumbing, heating or air-conditionaing the loss is a covered loss. It is very important to understand what is not covered.

Flood is one of the most common causes of loss in the US and the homeowner's policy does not cover it. Water back up such as from a blocked sewer line is not a covered loss (some companies offer the coverage as an option.) When there is repeated or continuous seepage or leakage from a system in the house that is not covered.
