You can make a claim for anything you'd like.. whether its going to be covered is another story. Try and limit your claims to large catastrophic losses like a hurricane or a fire. Your policy will cover certain perils. I suggest your read through your policy and contact your agent with questions. Some policies are "all risk" and cover everything that is not excluded. Typical exclusions for a homeowners insurance policy are wear & tear, maintenance, intentional acts, flood & earthquake.

Your Homeowners Insurance policy provides coverage for a wide range of perils. It is best to talk to your Insurance Professional about the specific terms and conditions, and any limitations included in your policy. It is safe to say that in general, there are two perils that your Homeowners Insurance wont cover namely loos due to earth movement and loss due to flood. In most cases, coverage for earth movement (sinkhole, earthquake, mudslide etc.) can be endorsed onto your policy. Flood Insurance, however, must be purchased separately.

It really depends on your policy and the perils or causes of loss that apply to the policy. Without knowing type of policy and or the company you are with it is hard to give you a direct answer. However a basic way to look at it is is it a maintenance issue or was damage caused by something like hail or a burglary. i wish I was able to better answer your question but there are so many different policies out there I would be guessintoast your particular situation .

if you are getting quotes ask the agent your questions if you currently own a policy get an appointment to sit down with your agent and go over the policy.
