In Connecticut, most Homeowners Insurance policies do cover damage caused by power surge that is itself caused by a covered peril. One good example is damage caused by a lightening strike. Another example can be experienced in the type of winter we had here or as a result of severe tropical storms suffered by many in the past couple of years. If weather of that kind knocks out power for an extended period of time, once restored, if there is surge damage, check with your Insurance Professional to see about coverage.

Most homeowner’s policies specifically exclude damages that are the result of “artificially generated electrical currents.” The do cover lightning which is a “natural” electrical current. Most specifically exclude damage to electronic components.
