Coverage for water damage is restricted by exclusions from the homeowner’s policy. if the leak is from outside water (roof, windows,) it isn’t covered. If it is from a back-up of a sewer or drain, it is not covered (unless you have bought that additional coverage.) If it is from water that is coming into the house from the ground through the foundation, it is not covered. The normal scenario is that a water line bursts and floods a room or more. what you do once the leak is detected is critical in limiting damage (which is your responsibility.) Know where the water shut off valve is located in your house. Call your agent, company or a “remediation contractor.” Get the flow stopped. Get the water removed; Get your property properly dried. the damage might be much less than you expect. the damage is covered after the deductible is satisfied.
