That is a great question! Unfortunately, the vast majority of homeowners policies will not cover damages due to flooding. There will be a separate policy for that coverage, or a rider added to your homeowners policy to protect you, especially if your home lies in an area where flooding is a possibility. It is an unpleasant surprise for many homeowners when they find their home isn't covered. I sincerely hope that is not the case for you. Thanks for asking!

Approximately 25% of the property damage annually in the USA is flood related. Most homeowner’s policies exclude damage caused by flood. Many of these companies work with the federal flood insurance program administered by FEMA. Many lenders require flood insurance, particularly if the home is in a “flood plain.”

The short and direct answer is no, a Homeowners' Insurance policy does noit cover for a flood. Flood Insurance must be obtained separately. FEMA administers the plans and they can be written through a number of different insurance companies. Check their website and look for Flood Certified Agents who would be happy to answer your questions and help you through the process.
