One of the benefits of pet insurance is that you can budget for it. If you don't have sums set aside for the pet emergencies, and would rather budget for the expenses of your pet, it may make better sense to you than someone who has more saved cash. With pet insurance, you may be able to provide some more expensive treatments that may pop up. To me, this is a cash flow issue. We all love our pets. Some are more willing and more able than others to pay for extraordinary care for them. My advice: don't insure a goldfish. Anything else is up to you.

Consumer Reports in Sept of 2011 concluded that pet insurance is not necessary for those who are willing to set aside some money each month for their pets' medical needs. However, other agencies concluded that it is necessary due to the high cost of treating pets and managing their pain. Again, if you are willing to provide dialysis, transplants, diabetes shots, and the like to extend the life of your pet, pet insurance can pay off.
