Being a health insurance broker is a extreamly difficult undertaking. The two markets that you will want to consider are the individual and the group markets. It is far more difficult to learn the group market because of the many IRC and federal regulations that come into play.
There is no one path to becoming a knowledgable and trusted broker although I do recomend that anyone atempting to undertake such a career put in many months of intense study. Continuing education courses are great sources for indepth information about different aspects of the health insurance world such as HSA's, FSA's, systems of managed care, HDHP's, self-funding, regulatory considerations, etc... Another wonderful resource that I view as manditory reading for anyone interested in brokering any employee benefts would be "The Handbook of Employee Benefits" by Jerry S. Rosenbloom, it is as close to a brokers bible as I have found.
I would be happy to discuss this in more detail if you like...
Feel free to email me or give me a call sometime,
