There are two categories of people who should have short term disability insurance.

The first group is people who live check-to-check with little or no savings. A short disruption in income could cause them to quickly fall behind on the mortgage, car payments, and other regular bills.

The second group is people who have a high probability of becoming temporarily disabled. People with active lifestyles or physically demanding occupations may need a policy. Women who are planning to have children will need to stop working while on maternity leave.
