The time it takes to receive your disability insurance is chosen when you purchase your policy. It is called the elimination period. What it means is, from the time your diagnosis triggers you to qualify receiving payments from your policy, there is a waiting period. You will need to wait the number of days or months you selected as your elimination period, before your benefits will begin.

It really depends upon your waiting or elimination period. The most common elimination periods are 30-60-90-180-360 days. The time period must be met in order to start receiving your benefits. Once you have a medical diagnosis of a total disability is the day the time period starts. Almost all companies go back a pay a lump sum once the elimination period is met to the day of diagnosis. If you are applying for Social Security disability the minimum time period is 9 months and can be as long as 2 years.

It ultimately depends on how long it takes for you to submit a claim form (and any other documents your carrier requires) and the carrier to review and process the paperwork. If everything is in good order when you submit the paperwork, the entire process should take maybe a couple of weeks. If the carrier requests additional paperwork (e.g. something needs to be clarified) or the forms you submitted were not completed properly, then it could take a little longer than that.

I hope the information is helpful - please feel free to contact me for assistance with your program and if you have any other questions. Thanks very much.
