That is a great question! Generally, once you are pregnant, it is too late to purchase a disability policy. It's kind of like trying to get an auto insurance policy after you've wrecked the car, the insurance company knows they will have to pay out, and are reluctant to sell you a policy, knowing they are going to take a loss. Unfortunately, unlike health insurance, with disability insurance the pre-existing condition exclusion will apply. I'm sorry. Thank you though, for asking!

You can apply for coverage although your current pregnancy will not be covered ( consider pre existing). Pre-existing is which symptoms existed within 12 months before the coverage effective date (may vary by State) that would cause a person to seek treatment from physician or for which a person was treated or received medical advice from a physician or took prescribed medicien. You will be covered for any other health problem which may happens to you.

To add to Peggy's response, many carriers will write a disability policy, but they'll add a pregnancy exclusion. After a normal childbirth (no C-section or complications), the exclusion can be removed. If yourmind is on DI, it's better to get the policy now and have the exclusion removed at a later date. Once the kiddos are running around the house, it's harder to find time to get the exams completed, or worry about financial documents. Do it before your life gets too crazy!

Normally, pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition and not covered by a disability insurance policy. It is up to the company whether they would postpone taking the application or exclude that pregnancy from coverage. Once the baby is born, you can apply for disability insurance prior to becoming pregnant again, to obtain coverage for that pregnancy.
