Both together form the "physical damage/loss protection" portion of your personal Auto Insurance policy. Collision is the more narrowly defined of the two in that it provides coverage in the event that your car is damaged as a result of coming into contact with another motor vehicle, a stationary object or a human being. Comprehensive provides coverage for most everything else, for example, theft, vandalism, fire, water, damage as a result of a falling object or contact with an animal, etc. Both types of coverage settlements would be subject to a deductible in most cases.
Collision coverage is for the physical damage to your automobile that comes about when you hit or are hit by another automobile, or object. This includes upset. The coverage pays for repairs to your vehicle for the amount of loss that exceeds your deductible. Comprehensive coverage pays for loss caused by anything other than collision. This coverage also includes damage caused by hitting a bird or animal.
