Comprehensive coverage is not widely understood. Basically it covers damage to a vehicle that comes from something other than a collision. This includes striking an animal. The coverage is tied to the value of the car but some drop the coverage because they are putting the car in storage for a period of time. Any loss sustained would not be covered if comprehensive coverage was not maintained, whether that was a car being burned in a garage fire or vandalism.

The way I explain it to clients is this. The collision deductible covers something that you have hit. The comprehensive deductible covers something that hit you. Of course there are different exceptions to this, but which deductible applies is determined by how the loss was attained and what caused it. It's a good idea to have both deductibles on.

Comprehensive coverage in most cases refers to Other Than Collision. This would be theft for example, or a rock thru a windshield. It would also cover you if you hit a deer or other animal and damaged your car. It covers vandalism to your car as well. I generally recommend Comprehensive coverage unless the vehicle is older and fully depreciated. It can be worth carrying for the glass coverage depending on the cost in your state.
