Comprehensive coverage is an optional coverage available on your car insurance. Also know as Other-Than-Collision on some policies, comprehensive coverage covers things like hitting a deer, hitting a bird, falling objects, and damage to your windshield from rocks and other objects. This is an optional coverage, and you can elect not to have it, but then you will be responsible for paying for any repairs to your vehicle as a result from damage from anything other than a collision.

Comprehensive is a coverage of your insurance. Comprehensive means other then collision. So in other words if your auto is damaged from a non collision event and you carry comprehensive coverage on your auto policy you would be covered for the damage minus your deductible. Such claims include, theft, vandalism, glass breakage, falling objects to name a few. The key is to remember other then collision. If you hit something or if something or someone hits you this is collision.
