The cheapest auto insurance is the policy that pays the most when you have a claim. That policy is generally written by a licensed insurance agent. If you don’t have an agent, get recommendations and then talk to the agent. He should listen, provide sound financial advice and communicate clearly with you and with the company. The most expensive policy is the one that does not provide adequate insurance when you have a claim, and that might well have been the policy with the lowest premium

Having a clean driving record is a great start. Insurance companies will underwrite based upon your driving record to be sure and in many cases will also include credit history as well. Many companies offer "bundling" discounts meaning you can save quite a lot if you insure your home and car with the same company.

That is an excellent question, and one that I get asked a lot! There are a couple of things that you can do to get your insurance rate lowered. The best is to continue to have a claim and ticket free driving record. If your record is clean, many companies will offer a discount. If yours doesn't then tell them you are going to drop the policy and switch, and see if that will motivate them to work with you on the rate, or to match the rate of the company you will switch to. (many will). Another way is to add your other policies to your auto insurer's company. Having multiple cars or policies with the same company will result usually in substantial discounts on all of the policies. The last way, and one I caution you on, is to raise the amount of your deductible. If it is $500 now, and you can afford to pay a $1000 if you need to, then raise it to $750 or $1,000, and get a lower rate. If you'd have a hard time coming up with $500, I'd not advise raising it, especially if you've filed claims before. Ask your agent to help, they are good that way, and thank you for asking!

There are many ways to get cheaper car insurance, so be sure to shop around. That may be something you do on your own or with the help of an independent agent who writes coverage for multiple companies and who therefore can shop for you.

There are a multitude of variables that will produce savings way beyond the scope of this answer, but think about what car you buy, what driving record you have, what use you have of the vehicle ( business, commute, pleasure ) , discounts for safety programs such as Defensive Driving or Drivers Training etc. My admonition is not to leap to a position of lower limits of coverage. Do everything else your insurance professional suggests before you take that extreme measure.
