In California insurance follows the car, not the driver. The car is associated with a household and the drivers in the household are named on the policy. If you are driving a car that doesn’t belong to you and are at fault in an accident, the insurance carried by the owner of the car on that car will be primary coverage. If the claims on the policy exceed the limits of the policy the policy where you are named as a driver will provide additional coverage up to the limits of that policy.

It depends on laws in your state and your policy. In most cases your insurance will cover you no matter whose car you drive. Remember, insurance always follow the driver first and then the car. Some policies will only cover named drivers, but this is not the norm. As a rule however, if you have insurance your insurance will pay for liability if you are involved in an at fault accident.
