Most states require documentation showing active insurance coverage before they will renew a registration. If you do not have your information, you can contact your insurance company to receive duplicates. Some companies even allow you to print insurance cards through your online account. Insurance companies are required to report insured individuals to the states, but the local DMV may not have access to that information.

If you do not have car insurance, you can normally pay the taxes due, but you cannot register the car for the next year. A minimum amount of car insurance is a requirement. Most insurance companies can provide new insurance cards on the day you get a new insurance policy.
