Car insurance covers the car. If you are going to borrow a car, check to determine whether there is current insurance on the car and that the limits are satisfactory. You will deal with the company insuring the car if you have an accident. If you own a car and have insurance on that car it can become secondary coverage if the coverage on the car you are borrowing is inadequate.

Automobile insurance covers the car. If you have an automobile policy and are operating someone else’s automobile, you might have some coverage, should the policy covering that auto be inadequate. It is difficult to think of a circumstance under which your comprehensive coverage would come into play because comprehensive usually indicates that the vehicle is not moving, so you couldn’t be operating it. There might be some unusual circumstances but you should check with an agent, adjuster or claims representative.
