Police may not respond to an accident. They avoid accidents in parking lots (the scene of many accidents.) With the proliferation of smart phones, a detail evaluation of a claim can be made by submitting photos of the damage to your car, and any other cars, people or objects. Auto theft is a crime and must be reported to the police.

There are certain loss claim reoports that can be opened without a police report. In an accident situation, it is, however, always best to have a report filed with the police. But if for example, you hit a deer, or your car catches fire or a tree falls on it, police reports are not generally necessary. If however, it is stolen or vandalized, in most cases, your insurance company will need to see a police report in order to settle your claim.

You can file a car insurance claim without a police report. However, if the accident was not your fault, you definitely would want to file a report. Calling the police will often protect yourself in case the story of the other party changes.

It is also possible the insurer will request that you file a report.

Yes you can file a auto claim without a police report. In fact if claim involves a collision and there is no bodily injury involved police will seldom if ever come to the scent to do a report. However if the claim involves a theft you do want to file a report to validate the claim.
