A landlord can require as part of the rental/lease agreement that a tenant secure renters insurance in order to rent from them. As of today I do not believe that there is any law on the books that requires it, but if it is written into the agreement then it is a must. I would recommend that every renter out there secure renters insurance. It is typically very inexpensive and will help protect you from some of life's mishaps.

Notwithstanding state peculiar legislation, a landlord can insist that a tenant have a renter’s policy.  The landlord does this to clarify the relationship he has with the tenant.  The landlord is not responsible for your property, even if it is destroyed along with his building.  He is not responsible for personal injury and physical damage that comes from someone coming onto the property that you have rented.  That is your responsibility and you would be the one sued.  This problem goes away for a small premium.
