    The Part D doughnut hole exists to make the plan affordable.

    If your covered drug charge totals exceed your basic coverage you enter a gap period known as the doughnut hole. In 2013 you reach the gap when the amount paid by you and your plan hit $2970.

    The doughnut hole will be reduced every year until is it completely closed in 2020.
