If you are under age 65 and qualify for SSDI (Social Security Disability Income) you will also qualify for Medicare after you have been on SSDI for 2 years.
You may also qualify for SSDI and Medicare if you have ESRD (end stage renal disease) or ALS (amyoptropic lateral sclerosis).
You can get Medicare before the age of 65 if you receive a Social Security Disability check (SSDI). If you receive an SSI check you will receive Medicaid not Medicare. For people who receive an SSDI check you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare 24 months from the date your award letter says you have been approved for Social Security disability. If you get an SSI check your Medicaid will start as soon as you get your first check.
