There is 7 months when your are guaranteed open enrollment for Medigap policies. It is the 3 months before you turn 65, the 3 months after you turn 65, and your month of your 65th birthday. After that time frame people must qualify by answering health questions on a Medicare supplement policy.

Unlike Medicare Advantage Plans, Open Enrollment for Medicare Supplements vary by State. Generally most States have a six month Open Enrollment Period after Turning 65 to enroll in a Medicare Supplement on a Guaranteed Issue basis. After your Open Enrollment Period you will be able to change your Medicare Supplement at any time subject to the companies underwriting requirements, meaning you must qualify health wise. Keep in mind you will also need to pick up a Prescription Drug Plan (Medicare Part D). The Initial Election Period for Medicare Part D is three months before, the month of and three months after you turn 65.
Open Enrollment under Federal law when you first enroll in Medicare Part B at age 65 or older, you have a guaranteed right to buy a Medicare Supplement policy for six months. Your acceptance is guaranteed and pre-existing health conditions are covered immediately. After your Open Enrollment period is over you can apply for a Medicare Supplement later at any time, but you may be charged a higher rate or be denied coverage if you have serious pre-existing health conditions. This may be your only chance to get a Medicare Supplement without having to go through medical underwriting.
