   This is an awesome question.  Employers will normally dictate what qualifies an employee to have benefits, normally it is based on amount of hours worked, whether you are full or part time, and there may be a waiting period.  I tell everyone that you can apply for your own health plan and if you change careers you won't have to worry about your health plan terminating because you change jobs.
