Does Medigap Cover Prescription Drugs?

   For all intents and purposes, the answer is no. There are certain drugs, which must be prescribed, e.g. Cancer treatment drugs, that are covered under Medicare Part B. Drugs covered under Medicare Part B would also be covered under a Medigap policy. Most prescription drugs however are not covered by traditional Medicare (Parts A and B) or Medigap supplemental insurance. An eligible Medicare beneficiary needs a Part D prescription drug plan in order to obtain drug coverage. You can enroll in a Part D plan at Medicare.gov, subject to certain enrollment period restrictions. As an alternative to a stand alone Part D plan, a beneficiary can enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes Part D coverage (MAPD). A beneficiary who enrolls in an MAPD cannot have a Medigap policy or a stand alone Part D plan. It's a good idea to find a licensed insurance agent who specializes in Medicare plans to review your needs and objectives and present you with optimal solutions.

   Generally speaking,a Medigap policy will not cover prescription drugs. However,certain prescribed drugs covered under Medicare part B qualify for coverage under a Medigap policy. Most prescription drugs require enrollment into a part D prescription drug plan. I recommend locating a licensed agent specializing in Medicare/prescription drug plans to find the prescription plan the best suits your needs...
