How Long Does It Take For Disability Insurance To Kick In?
- 10968 POINTSview profileTim WilhoitOwner, Your Friend 4 Life, Brentwood TNI believe you are asking when the disability insurance benefits begin. All disability policies have a waiting period called the elimination period. This can be found on the declaration page in your policy. The elimination period is the period of time between a medical diagnosis of the disability and when benefits begin to pay to the insured. The most common elimination periods are 30-60-90-180-360 days.Answered on November 16, 2014flag this answer

The shorter the elimination period, and the sooner the disability benefits kick in, the higher the premium usually is. A common elimination period for long term disability insurance is three months.Answered on November 16, 2014flag this answer

It really depends on the type of policy you have. Many people have short-term disability with their employer, aka STD. That will commonly start coverage after as little as 30 days. Check with you HR department for the details. Many people have work coverage known as LTD or long-term disability. The most common period requires a wait of 90 days "elimination period" before benefits start. I hope that helps! Good luck.Answered on June 8, 2016flag this answer
