A teenager must be included in a car insurance policy as soon as they have a license. In California that usually means that they will be assigned to a vehicle in the household where they are living. To comply with state law each driver must be insured to operate a car.

For a variety of reasons many young people do not get driver’s licenses at the earliest possible age. I have seen drivers being added onto policies after age 20. Some students pursue such rigorous academic studies that driving is not an option. The bad news is that in California it isn’t your age when you start driving but the number of years experience you have as a driver that will determine the classification used on your automobile insurance.
