An auto policy can always be cancelled if you fail to make premium payments.  Normally, companies wait until renewal to make a decision regarding future coverage.  If the company determines that the conditions of the car and household have changed dramatically they can cancel the policy.  Normally this is effective on the expiration date of the policy.  Short of cancelling the policy they can offer renewal at an adjusted premium.
