Most student health plans provide limited benefits and are overpriced. For about the same premium you can usually get a true major medical plan.

Student health plans usually include benefits centered around the student health center and possibly an affiliation with a local hospital. Pre-existing conditions may not be covered at all or there will be a delay of up to 12 months before they are considered a covered expense.

Also the health policies have an expiration date, usually coinciding with the school year.

Rutgers health insurance (presumably) has a  student plan option where you can purchase medical coverage at a reasonable rate. There also may be limited underwriting, although the Network may not be national.

You should compare this option with your existing coverage (if you have any). A local experienced broker is the best resource.
