Keeping in mind that cheap is not necessarily the best should you ever need it, I think that one general rule of thumb is that if you are a newly licensed young driver, it will more than likely be less costly to be added to your parent's auto policy as opposed to having your own. If however, you are going to be purchasing your own car and registering it in your own name, it would be beneficial to talk to your parent's Insurance Professional about setting up a policy with the same company they have.
